Our Story

In 2018 coffee in hand, calendars open, and one shared goal: help each other grow their businesses, a bunch of strangers walked into business referral meeting. They came from different industries, different backgrounds, different ages, races, religions, and very life stories. The room wasn’t supposed to change their lives—just their sales numbers. But fortunately that’s not how it went.

Those early mornings were structured and intentional. Sixty seconds to speak. Referrals passed. Handshakes, nods, encouragement. What started as polite professionalism slowly softened into trust and something rare began to form.

Wednesday mornings turned into text threads. Text threads turned into lunches. Lunches turned into Thirsty Thursdays, where referrals were replaced by laughter and deadlines by deep conversations. Careers grew, yes—but so did families, relationships, and roots. We’ve cheered each other on through promotions, pivots, babies, heartbreaks, health battles, and moments that required more strength than any of us had alone.

We learned each other’s businesses, but more importantly, we learned each other. How to show up when someone is tired. How to speak up when someone needs advocating for. How to sit quietly when there are no words. When to push when comfort becomes a crutch. This group became proof that diversity isn’t a hurdle—it’s pure magic. Different perspectives made us sharper. Different beliefs made us more compassionate. Different life stages made us wiser.

When one of ours is down, we don’t scatter—we close ranks. We grow louder, stronger, more determined in the fight to lift them up. Business referrals became lifelines. A chosen family. A powerhouse of loyalty, grit, humor, and heart. Bound by passion for our work, love for our people, our faiths, and an unwavering commitment to each other and our community.

This is the BABZ of Charleston. Melissa. Kathy. Kristen. Kim. Janice. Kelly. Stephanie. Hilary. Eight women who started out showing up for business and thankfully stayed for each other.

And this is what happens when business turns into belonging. 💛
